Beginning a New School Year in Mexico City
Dear Friends and Family,
The past year has been an overwhelming one, with many ups and downs. For the school year 2023/24, we had a new general director, Kevin Passafiume. Then our academic director decided to step down, so Kevin’s wife Amy took on the job with only a week to go before staff training would start. The Passafiumes have many years of experience in both cross-cultural ministry and education, so they were a wonderful addition to the school. There were also several other change overs in staff, some very last minute, so I admire how Kevin, Amy and the other office staff handled it all. I also appreciated the direction that their leadership was taking the school in.
It came as quite a shock this spring that the school board decided to sell BridgeWay. They had been facing ongoing financial struggles. So, the school is now owned by a Mexican couple, Juan Yanez and Diana Sanchez. They own two other Christian schools in Mexico City and felt called to lead BridgeWay. Disappointingly, the Passafiumes have moved to Japan to work at international schools there. So, I am feeling a lot of uncertainty about how the next school year will go – new administration, new expectations, some new staff...
The staff begins orientation next week, which gives us a good amount of time to begin the transition before students arrive on September 2nd. I’m looking forward to teaching some students I have already had who are now in 6th grade, and a new (to me) group of 5th graders.
Meanwhile, Abraham and I are doing well. He continues to run his business distributing Christian literature in Spanish. We had our second move in two years this past May. Although we have had three months of plumbing issues, things seem to be flowing smoothly now. I’m excited to have a kitchen that I can use more easily and a nice sized living/dining room with good light. The commute to work is a lot longer than previously, though. All in all, I’m hoping this place will work out better than the last two.
I am so thankful to God for all of you, my family and friends. Your ongoing support means the world to me.
In His Grace,
Gwen
