Judah and Jessie Rath
Judah and Jessie Rath are in Barranquilla, Colombia with their son Henry. Judah has a heart for working with youth and vulnerable people in wholistic mission, and Jessie is passionate about at-risk youth and education initiatives. they are entering their third year in Colombia, presently spending time in camp-related discipleship programs, educational initiatives, and social projects in different communities.
Here are some of their initiatives:
Campfire: Campfire is Christian camping experience for youth living in Colombia. Campfire’s goal is to connect and mobilize youth from all different backgrounds and help them experience Jesus outside the normal context of their communities and families. Camps are a mix of both youth who attend church and youth who don’t. Within the church, the camp always has youth representing 10 or more churches. Jessie and Judah long to see these youth grow into a network of mutual support and encouragement. Check out the project on Instagram @Campfirecol or at https://lamcanada.ca/project/147/campfire-colombia-christian-camping-for-youth.
REACH: Partnering with Camp IAWAH, REACH is a program under Campfire designed to expose and challenge both Canadian and Colombian youth in their understanding of Christian leadership, working and learning together to achieve a fuller picture of Christ’s work on earth. The program focus is on gaining a sociological and theological understanding of our responsibility as Christ-followers in helping to alleviate poverty.
New Life Store: New Life Store is a project aimed at helping under-resourced mothers provide income for their families from home. Through selling second-hand clothing, these women both help their families and become a valuable source of inexpensive clothing for their neighbours. Check out more in Instagram @NewLifeStore
English Education: El Pacto is a network of Christian primary schools in impoverished neighbourhoods in Barranquilla. These schools are a loving refuge for these children, who would otherwise be at much higher risk in the local public school system. Jessie is mentoring the teachers of this network in implementing an English curriculum, to help provide future opportunities for the children through English education. Intermediate skill in English can be a launching point for many young people to get well-paying jobs that can provide a measure of stability to their families.
