Honduras is located in Central America between Guatemala and Nicaragua. Originally part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and one-half decades of predominantly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982.

The official language is Spanish (93%), with about 4.6% Amerindian dialects. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion.

Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc on the country in 1998, destroying roads, bridges, and property over a large portion of the country. Thousands of people are still missing.
