Colombia is located at the northern tip of South America. Rich in natural resources and history, Colombia exports coffee, cut flowers, bananas, emeralds, textiles, clothing and footwear. Sadly, it also has major bases for the illegal drug industry.

The illegal drug trade continues to be a large obstacle for the Colombian government, and implementation of legal alternatives for farmers has been largely unsuccessful. In past decades, drug trafficking cartels caused much of the violence in the country, but the current influence of guerrilla and paramilitary groups have now largely eclipsed the cartels. Controlling large areas of the countryside, guerrillas have driven an estimated 2,500,000 people to seek refuge in other cities. Far from home, the displaced families experience great hardship as they struggle to "make a new life.”
Kidnapping is a huge problem, with rival guerrilla and paramilitary groups using ransom money to help finance their operations.
